Stephen Daniel Demchik Memorial Scholarship Award
The Arizona High School Hockey Association, through the support of Behind the Mask, created an academic scholarship award in the memory of Stephen Daniel Demchik, a player in the Thunderbird High School hockey program who died in a hiking accident on August 3rd, 2006.
Randy Exelby of Behind the Mask has teamed with AHSHA for this monetary award. Randy has always been a strong supporter of AHSHA and of all Arizona hockey. Many thanks go to Randy for his support of this scholarship throughout the years.
Each year players who are current high school seniors are eligible to apply for this award. The qualifications for this monetary scholarship are based on a player’s quality of academic success, civic character, leadership both on and off the ice, as well as fair play. Applicants are asked to provide information to the league that demonstrates these qualities along with a brief essay explaining why they should receive the scholarship. 2010 Recipient - Thomas Tuohy
The Stephen Daniel Demchick Memorial Scholarship Committee is proud to announce the 2010 recipient as Thomas R. Tuohy III. Tuohy is a senior at Brophy Collect Preparatory and has played with AHSHA for his four years in high school. He feels that he has learned many life lessons from the rink such as "Never give up" and "Act in the best interest of the common good." AHSHA is proud to recognize him for his academic success, civic character and leadership both on and off the ice. 2009 Recipient - Carsen Stringer
Congratulations to Carsen Stringer, a senior attending North Canyon High School and Captain of the Lady Coyotes. Carsen carries a 4.87 GPA, is Vice President of the National Honor Society, National Merit Finalist. She plans to attend MIT to pursue a degree in Biomedical Engineering. (Photo by Ladee K. Rickard)
2008 Recipient - Eric DeWeese
After reviewing the applications, The Arizona High School Hockey Association is proud to announce that this year’s winner for the second annual Stephen Daniel Demchik Memorial Scholarship is Eric DeWeese, a member of the Tucson Monsoon. Eric has played four years in the AHSHA program and attends Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson. Eric has demonstrated the qualities that have been established for the scholarship and we are happy to join with him as a partner in his education beyond high school by presenting him with this scholarship in the amount of $1,000 dollars to be used at the College or University that he attends.
Ryan will be recognized at the beginning of the Tucson game on Sunday, April 6. Dave Demchik, Randy Exelby, and Mary Ann Williams (chair) will present a certificate to the player. (Photo by Darla Fribbs)
